Sight Reading Tips

Reading ledger lines

Ledger lines extend the staff. They look intimidating because the lines are short and close together, but they follow exactly the same line-space pattern as the staff.

Learn the ledger landmarks

WhereNote
1 ledger line below trebleMiddle C (C4)
1 ledger line above bassMiddle C (C4)
2 ledger lines above trebleC6
1 ledger line above trebleA5
2 ledger lines below bassC2
1 ledger line below bassE2

The pattern to notice: two ledger lines above the treble staff and two below the bass staff are both Cs, two octaves above and below middle C.

The middle-C overlap

Notes around middle C can be written on either staff. D4, for example, sits in the space just below the treble staff, or in the space just above middle C's ledger line when written on the bass staff. Music for beginners often moves the left hand up into this zone, so practise reading the same notes in both clefs.
